What is Barcode Technology?

Barcode technology is a laser based reading of specific form of printed images. Barcode require line of site for reading. Barcode has both single directional and multi-directional reader.

Types of barcode reader for library?

There are different type of barcode readers are available in the market, we recommend following as per the usage.

(1) Wired barcode scanner : for circulation purposes only.

NOTE: major limitation of the wired barcode scanner that it need to connected with system (PC/ Desktop) all the time, extension of the barcode label depends on the wire.

(2) Wireless barcode scanner: for circulation as well as inventory process only

NOTE: Wireless/ Memory Stick scanner provide freedom of movement within the circulation counter, books can be issued from any location within the library (within the barcode wireless zone).

Wireless/Memory Stick barcode scanner ideal for inventory process. If library is multi-floor we recommend memory stick barcode scanner as wireless will be problem.

Some barcode support both Wireless/Memory stick, the information is stored in the memory stick if wireless got disconnected and as the wireless got connected the information is passed to the library system or application.

(3) All directional barcode scanner: for circulation, user in-out register.

NOTE: all directional barcode scanner will help the library circulation staff or user entering the library to display barcode label to the scanner in any directional, there is no need to show the label in very specific orientation. This will help the movement faster especially at the circulation counter and in-and-out register system.

What type of barcode label printer, recommend for library?

I recommend a standard printer available in the market, main reason for not recommending barcode printer, as these barcode printer are specifically designed for generating barcode labels only, and as per library procurement process, these printer will be very rarely used Standard laser printer with good quality spine label can do wonders for the library.

What is RFID?

RFID is basically radio wave technology, there two major components in the RFID (1) the signal receiver (RFID Antenna) (2) signal generator (RFID Tags). RFID doesn't need line of sights as information is passed thru radio signals

Types of RFID Frequency Technology?

Currently there multiple radio frequency available starting from your mobile device to oven in the kitchen, but majorly there are two technology used in the library domain (1) HF (High Frequency : 13.56Mhz) (2) UHF (UItra High Frequency 860-960 Mhz)

Which is most used RFID Frequency in Library?

HF (High Frequency 13.56Mhz) is the most widely used RFID Frequency in the world, UHF is currently used in some libraries.

Most of the international standards and protocols support HF only.

What is the difference between UHF and HF?

Following are some major difference

(1) Reading Range

1.a: HF has a reading range of 5 cms to 1 meter. Depending on the size of the RFID antenna. Handheld Reader Antenna will have maximum 5 cms reading rangeĀ  whereas RFID Gate Antenna will have 1 to 1.75 meter reading range between two panels.

1.b: UHF has a reading range of 5cms to 4 meter depending on the RFID tag size. RFID gate can be installed with maximum 2-3 meter between the panel.

1.c: HF follow international standard data model used for tag programming, whereas UHF has only ASCII format. Standard Data Model standard helps libraries to acquire any RFID hardware from any vendor. Where ASCII or non-Data Model standard locks the RFID to the supplied vendor only.

1.d: UHF is the developed for faster and longer distance reading of resources, where as HF is purely designed for close proximity transaction. UHF is primarily used in warehouse, inventory, toll bridge, etc. Where HF is used for document tracking, visitor and crowd management, secure entry and exit points, etc.

Which is the best suitable Library Management Software for my institute?

All are have unique features and functionality, whether they meet your requirements or not, is the question. A Library has it's style of working, a software should accommodate into it, rather library accommodate to the software.

Most important feature a library professional has to look into to the product is international standards and protocol supported by it. For example MARC21, UNICODE, ISO2709, SIP2/NCIP, Bootstrap (accessible by laptop, desktop, mobile phone, tablets, etc), Catalogue any type of resources, create your own framework or vendor should create as and when required, etc.

What type of Digital Library Management Software is suitable?

Digital library management software should allow to manage any form digital content like, but not limited to, PDF, Movie, Images, URLs, Animation, etc. Based on the type of documents, it should support opening and using of the same resources on the same platform. As different type of resources is able to catalogue, library should be able to catalogue any type of resource with any cataloging framework.
